I’m a competitive 3.5/4.0 league tennis player, and Braven has been an excellent energy source for both pre-game and pre-workout fuel, as well as during long tennis matches. The texture is a bit like taffy, but who doesn’t love a candy bar with extra benefits? Plus, it offers great value compared to other bars I’ve tried in the past.
I have mixed feelings about these bars. When I first opened the wrapper, I was presented with something that looked (and smelled) like a piece of plastic. I decided to move forward and take a bite. The experience was kind of like eating taffy… difficult to chew, gooey, sticks to your teeth, difficult to swallow. They DO have less calories and fat content, and a bit more protein than a candy bar (a paltry amount however compared to protein bars and powders). But they do include caffeine, although about half the amount of a typical take-out size of coffee, but still providing a substantial kick. The plus for this product is the addition of several vitamins and minerals with substantial DV percentages (B6, B12 and Niacin at well over 100%) as well as significant amounts of Calcium and Potassium. So overall I guess these bars are good for an occasional slight pick-me-up and as a nutritional supplement, but I’m afraid the marketing of this product needs work… i.e. they are NOTHING like a candy bar. I can’t recommend… I just can’t get past the sticky, gooey part.
Kinda like taffy. The caffeine is there for sure but the flavors are hit or miss. It’s basically candy with caffeine but works well.
Most people are going to want to know first of all how these energy bars taste because if it tastes terrible it doesn’t matter how well it works. I didn’t care for the cola blast bars, but the energy kick bars were good. I won’t describe them as great, but they didn’t gag me. The texture reminds me of a softer “bit o’ honey” candy. It’s very firm and chewy, but it doesn’t stick to your teeth.
I had one this morning with my coffee and I feel energized and very awake. Each bar is around 170 calories so it may be a decent choice for a person watching their weight. I had a slight headache this morning and the massive jolt of caffeine knocked that right out. I haven’t paid a lot of attention to the ingredients, but I would recommend using caution with this product or any other energy supplement.
The ad says this is like eating candy. That’s because this basically is caffeinated candy with a little bit of protein thrown in to make it look healthier than it really is.
Overall, the texture of this bar is very much like eating saltwater taffy. As you can see from my picture, it’s just a bar that’s been extruded through a hole to make a longer piece. But even the picture looks like a long bar of saltwater taffy. Overall, the flavor is fone. I like the energy flavor more than the cola flavor but neither one of them is all that disappointing. The cola flavor tastes like cheap generic cola, but it’s not unpleasant.
I do like the fact that it’s very chewy. It takes a while to eat these bars, so your jaw gets a workout and after finishing you know you’ve actually eaten something. That may or may not be helpful depending on what you actually want to use it for. For me, I liked having it as a bit of a pre/mid workout energy boost. In that sense, the chewiness was almost annoying because I wanted to finish it quickly, but I can see where if you’re using it as more of a longer run snack it might be better suited.
Realistically the negative thing about this is how much pure sugar is in the bar. There’s no complex carbohydrates going on here. It’s all just, BOOM here it is, sugar. That content requires you to eat a little bit throughout your workout instead of being able to have it all before you start. Again, depending on how you might want to use it that might be a benefit or disadvantage. I admit that it’s nice to take a quick break and take a chew off during rest periods.
So, overall, not the worst thing ever, for sure. There’s probably some areas where it could be improved but in general these aren’t bad.
The consistency of this bar is kind of like a tootsie roll but the flavor of course is not the same as a Tootsie Roll. The cola bar actually taste a bit like soda and the other bar taste like candy but I can’t really pinpoint the flavor exactly. But both of the bars tasted good.
I would say that this product is good in a pinch like today, for example when I needed a little bit of a rush of energy. I live here in Texas and I was on hike in about 2 1/2 hours in. I needed something to help me finish my workout and this provided me the fuel I needed.
Usually, when I hike, I like to take some type of fruit or nuts with me because I feel more satiated. But today I needed something that would work rapidly because I was really losing energy quickly so the carbs and sugar and caffeine helped give me the boost that I needed to, finish up this long hike .
I will definitely keep a few of these bars in my backpack for days like this on the trail where I require energy that rapidly assimilates in my body.
As these bars are described, they’re like a candy bar energy drink alternative. My assumption was they would be sweet and tangy like a laffy taffy. The bars are stiff like a taffy, but the flavor is quite mild. I can only speak to their claims, but 75mg of caffeine, b-vitamins, and a small amount of sugar does line up with the energy drink kind of nutrition.
The bag comes with 10 bars, 5 of the cola flavor, 5 of energy kick flavor (I think they were going for a mtn dew flavor).
Overall, these do have a bit of calories and caffeine, so they’re not bad for a pre-workout snack, however for $30 for the 10 bars, this is quite steep and my personally reaction for $3 a serving would be to buy a nice cold carbonated energy drink.
