I’ve been ordering various brands of collagen for a while now, and this one ranks up there as on of the most expensive ones I’ve tried so far. It seems to have a good blend and amount of collagen, but I have difficulty in getting it to fully blend in with cold milk. It also has a bit of an unpleasant smell and it seems to be a combination of egg and vegetable odor- possibly from the leaf extract ingredient. Once I’ve got it mixed into hot coffee, I don’t really notice the smell. Even mixing it with a hot coffee in a blender, there’s still some unmixed stuff left in the bottom of my cup. I think I’ll stick with pure bovine collagen from now on.
This Yoli collagen powder is good, I was very curious to compare it to other versions, liquid and pill based, that I have been using for a while, as based on the ingredients they are both very similar, but with the advantage of this one being in combination with protein and it is quickly absorbed. There are some points that are worth mentioning and discussing about this protein, but before that a few quick words about the packing and presentation of it. The powder is shipped in a well insulated Amazon box and inside is the plastic retail bag with the collagen and protein, and the company is doing an excellent job with the label and all the possible information outlined on it, including all the ingredients and nutritional values.
This specific collagen and protein comes in a bag that is with 30 servings, which can translate to 30 days of use, without any artificial flavors or added sugar, which is again a preferable flavor for me.
Positives:
– Great combination between collagen and protein – if you are looking for dairy free protein to substitute a regular whey protein, this one is a very good choice, it is gluten, dairy and soy free, plus non-gmo as well.
– No sugar, no artificial coloring, no preservatives, in addition it is keto and paleo friendly.
– Easy to prepare and use – I mix every dose with almond milk and drink it after a meal, the taste is not too chocolaty and definitely not as creamy as whey protein.
– Good supplement for everyone that is actively exercising or training, wants healthier bones, hair and nails.
Negatives:
– Expensive – 30 servings only for $99, at the same price you can get over twice the servings from good quality protein plus collagen pills.
– Taste – It’s definitely an acquired taste, a bit plain and bland compared to regular protein.
– Not evaluated or rated by the FDA, definitely an issue if you are someone that is concerned about it.
Overall, good collagen powder, and a very good substitution to regular pills and liquids, plus protein for any people that are trying to stay away from dairy.
I did some research on the ingredients in this expensive collagen powder.
I’m 67 and who knew I needed hyaluronic acid and MSM but I do. I cook all my meals and stay away from grains, for the most part, but my knees hurt. I’ve been taking collagen for the past year, and I use 4 tbs in 16 ounces of soy milk, it has helped my nails, a little. I still have weak muscles.
So researching the additions to the collagen powder, I discovered the following: You can get MSM through diet but your synovial fluid reduces with age and hyaluronic acid mimics synovial fluid. Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in connective tissues such as cartilage.
The taste: I can drink some pretty funky stuff so keep that in mind. I add my collagen powder to a homemade green smoothie and I could taste it, not a lot but I noticed it. You use one scoop which is 2 tbs per 8 ounces of liquid, but using more liquid would thin out the taste
.
However, you can buy collagen powder much cheaper and add the MSM, the Sodium hyaluronate and the Gynostemma Leaf Powder. Gynostemma Leaf is an adaptogen, and not sure I need that as much as the MSM and the stuff to help my synovial fluid. So although I love this combination added into the collagen powder, it’s too expensive for me to purchase so I would have to purchase them individually and add them.
This collagen has some slight differences to most collagen powders I’ve tried. It takes slightly longer to dissolve, and when it is dissolved, the liquid is a bit thicker. However some ingredients aren’t dissolving at all, leaving white and black particles at the bottom. If you shake up your collagen to mix it in water, this generates a lot less foam, which is helpful. It also has less of that earthy flavor that most collagens have.
Given the massive cost of this product, we would expect it to be MUCH better in quality, absorption, bioavailability, etc, but there’s nothing on the label that makes that argument. I can’t observe any difference in effect (in the short-term, anyway). There’s full-spectrum collagen from excellent brands that are far less expensive. The added ingredients are pretty ordinary, although un-denatured type-II collagen does tend to be expensive, but I’m not sure that it explains this price, unless there’s a huge amount in this.
The company’s other products are also very expensive. If you look at the Yoli Amazon store, it only explains that many other companies don’t use the ingredients (or quality of ingredients) that they claim, implying that the “best” ingredients are making up the difference in price. I can see that Yoli is spending quite a bit more on graphic design and marketing, but I don’t see credible, specific benefits to my health over competing products.
It seems to be a good product, but at this price it seems to be a very poor value.
I’ve tried a handful of unflavored collagen powders in the past. The most affordable of which was $1.44/oz. This product, as you may be aware, is $7.15/oz. At 4x – 5x the price of other powders, even if it did offer 4x – 5x the benefit, I think I’d find it difficult to pay that sort of price per month (i.e. $99 / 30 servings).
Enjoying this collagen supplement.
